Over the Years...

Short Subjects
That one night in a million. This section features short articles sent in by AA subscribers, as well as many newsletter articles that are so well written that they deserve world wide publication. Articles cover just about every subject, including observing, humor, and the every day life happenings of amateur astronomers. Many feel that this is one of the best parts of the magazine. Unable to attend all the large national conventions? Reading about them in Amateur Astronomy is almost as good as attending them in person. Our star party reports have contained as many as 10 pages and some have had over 30 photographs of the site, amateur astronomers and interesting telescopes that were present. The major events covered include; Astrofest, the Oregon Star Party, Riverside, Stellafane, Table Mountain, the Texas Star Party, Nebraska, Oregon, and the Winter Star Party. Many other growing events have been covered as well. There is much to learn about telescope making from these articles.

TelescopesPat Rochford's 24
Out articles on telescope making have covered everything from Ron Ravneberg's 8" Alice - a travel scope that has been widely copied, to Tom Clark's 36" Yard Scope. There have been many articles on large scopes, including Tom Gyssems' 22", Vince LeGuren's 30", and Norman Pappas' 140 pound 25" that includes a platform drive built into the scope! Traveling scopes have been very popular, including Tom Noe's Teleport, a 10" that rides on his motorcycle with him, Chuck Shaw's 10" that fits into a couple of small suitcases, Barry Peckham's flying 10" that has been around the country a lot, as well as featuring Chuck Dethloff's 10" folding scope. Tom Clark had two articles on Ultra-Lights, featuring a 50 pound 10", a 97 pound 18" and a 160 pound 24".

Travel ArticlesMountains
Amateur Astronomy has featured many articles about different observing sites all over the United States and the world. They have   covered observing from the outback in Australia, eclipse travels from around the world, and others about astronomers taking the opportunity to observe from somewhere other than their own home observing grounds.
